These notes are cataloged by an order set up by Bradbeer in 1915.  This order was supplemented and amended by Criswell starting in 1957 with his 1st edition through his 1992 4th edition.  Shull's new reference in 2007 has made a number of changes to that order by adding some new variety, deleting a few variety that probably don't exist and changing the order slightly by renumbering a few variety.  I am following this order with what I have listed below.  However, I believe further changes should be made as the notes aren't listed in their correct order of issuance.  The plain notes were the first issue, those with vignettes listed first were the second issuance and the green tint notes were the last issue.  Maybe this too will be corrected in a later edition of Shull's referernce work.

ONE DOLLAR
Milkmaid Vignette - 2nd Issue

TW1  $1.00  Military:   Image
The tint plate (underprint) is a darker orange color.  The rosettes are more solid or the inking is heavier on this variety.
TW1A  $1.00  Civil/Military:   Image
Military warrant used for Civil purpose with Civil handwritten over Military.  These are Very Scarce!
TW1B - Error note said to have tint on front & back.??  It isn't known if these were printed 2, 4 or 8 subject to a sheet.  I have seen and handled sheets of 3 subjects of $5 & $10.  The only thing we do know is that Warrants were printed at least two to a sheet and numbered in order.  There could have been 2, 3, 4 or 8 of these created as described or without tint on face.  It is possible there were more but it isn't probable in my opinion for this event if it was a 'Human Error'.  If this truly has the tint on both sides I wonder if it could have been a transitional or trial piece that ended up being used.  ie:  Printing a back on the note like is found with the $2.50 and some of the other denominations.
TW2  $1.00  Civil:   Image
The tint plate for this type is a lighter more yellowish orange color.  The lines of the design are finer holding less ink.
TW2A  $1.00  Military/Civil:   Image
This warrant was used for Military purpose with Military handwritten over Civil.  These are seldom seen!  I think many of the Civil warrants were used for Military purpose and didn't have this notation made on them.

Comparrison Image of the two Tint Plates found on the Military TW1 and Civil TW2 Warrants

There may also be differences in the paper.
Type of paper affects color (to the eye) as well.

Green Tint Varieties - 3rd Issue

TW3  $1.00  Military:   no image available at this time
Green tint plate.  Very thin paper.
TW3A  $1.00  Military:   Image
This warrant is exactly like TW3 but there is a handwritten SIX over EIGHT at the top.  This is a New Variety I recently sent to Hugh Shull for inclusion in his next update.  It was probably overlooked as it is recorded for Civil Service listed as TW4A.

TW4  $1.00  Civil:

Here are examples of the Regular Scroll N and Fancy Scroll N.
The imaged N's show White & Blue paper at top and Two Varieties of Gray paper at bottom.

This next image shows you the difference in paper found with these $5 Washington notes.
The one characteristic I've found with the gray paper is that one is thick and the other thin.  Blue & Gray are Military.

Blue                              Thick Gray                        Thin Gray                            White
Green Tint Plate - 3rd Issue

TW13  $5.00  Military:  no image available at this time   (see TW13A)
So-called "common" variety.  I haven't seen one of these in a long time!  Dues is spelled correctly!
TW13A  $5.00  Military:   image
Dues misspelled as DEUS >
TW13A-1  $5.00  Military:   no image available at this time
Same as TW13A with handwritten SIX over EIGHT at the top.
TW13B  $5.00  Military:  no image available at this time
Same as TW13 with handwritten SIX over EIGHT at the top.
(TW13B represents one of the problems with cataloging these varieties.  I think this should be listed as 13A, 13A as 13B and 13A-1 as 13C, or, some other way.  DEUS is an ERROR and while I guess it constitutes a variety it is secondary to primary varieties.  There are a number of the handwritten changes to the text and they should have precedent over this printer error.)

TW14  $5.00  Civil:
no image available at this time
Same design as TW13 with Dues spelled correctly
TW14A  $5.00  Civil:  no image available at this time

Same as TW15 except word "approved" appears completely on third line of text.

This image (parts 1,2,3) shows detail of differences for all the varieties of TW15-16E.
                        1)  Approved is complete on the 2nd line of text
                        2)  Approved is found entirely on the 3rd line of text.
3a)  Large Printed Q, before  "under Act".  Handwritten Q & P do not affect variety.
3b)  Ap=proved is hyphenated with only ap on the 2nd line and balance on the 3rd line

TW16  $5.00  Civil:

Tall Ship - 2nd Issue
This is probably the most popular Type Note

TW17  $10.00  Military:   Image
Red tint:  Imaged note here is different plating (black border) than the one pictured in Shull
TW17A  $10.00  Military:   no image available at this time
Said to be "printed on blue paper".  I've never seen one and I question this description!  The paper, imaged in Shull, appears more gray or blue-gray like some of the $5's I've listed.  I withhold my opinion here and suggest you might consider just saying printed on different type of paper.  If this can be listed as an error or variety then the Five Dollar notes should also be listed with the Gray Paper (thick & thin).

TW61  $ Written. Amount  Purpose Defined:   Image  Back  (imaged Shull),
Quote from Criswell: "Criswell number 61 is known with the autographed signature of Sam Houston on the back".   This variety of Warrant provides the purpose, written out, for issuing the warrant.  Usually they are MILITARY and most of them state they are 'For Protection of the Frontier'.  These warrants are Texas Ranger related, ie: Ranging Cavalry.  With dates ranging from February through May the warrants actually signed by General Houston (Governor) are Out of Order.  There are likely others of this same format that do go here with this number.  Then again, it might be a long time before a new listing order can be created that takes into account the Early State of Texas warrants.  There are many unlisted varieties in that group that runs from February 1846 - February 1861.

TW64
$ Written. Amount  Purpose Defined:   Image   Back   (imaged Shull)
