Early Texas
AW13 #
1076 Nov 30th, 1847 S. G. Haynie
Contingent Expenses of the State Department ~ Postage. Endorsed
on back by S. G. Haynie, PM (Post Master) The Handbook of Texas says
Haynie wasn't named Postmaster until of Austin Texas until 1849; but, here
he endorses this warrant as PM which must mean he was at least acting PM
in 1847 and perhaps his postition was formalized later. Haynie would
be Mayor of Austin in 1850 & 1851. He was an Odd Fellow as well
as a Mason. He was also a physician, Congressman and merchant. A
very nice example of this rather common warrant. ic, AU $165.00

My Opinion on the
So-Called HAVANA
counterfeits:
I believe these notes to be
genuine. Most known examples have six
digit serial numbers and they are all D plate. I've actually
seen a few very high 5 digit serial numbers. I believe they
were the last notes to be printed by the CS Treasury Dept.
after the federal raid on Columbia in February 1865. The Treasury
Note Bureau set up temporary shop in Anderson S.C. and printed notes
there until May 1, 1865. May 2nd Anderson was raided and the
print shop was destroyed.
