Coupons -
While reading Correspondence of Confederate Treasury I discovered that
Bond Cupons were used as currency. These cupons and specie [coin]
were the ONLY monies
acceptable for Import Duties. Therefore, cupons are a legitimate
example of Confederate "currency". Treasury Notes
are what we collect. Anything under $5 were considered or called Change Notes.
Fractional state notes [only 50ct
Confederate] were used in place of specie or coin in most cases;
but, they, along with Treasury notes were NOT acceptable to pay for
import duties. As stated above, ONLY specie [foreign or domestic]
and Bond Cupons!
